nihoshika - light illuminated on the room / 部屋に照らされた光 [english translation]
高校最後の夏休み
the summer break after high school
僕はパソコンゲームしかしていませんでした
i did nothing but play computer games
暗いへやで明りはモニターの光だけで
the only light shining in that dark room was from my computer monitor
目が悪くなるようなところでした
that place wasn't good for my eyesight
もちろんへやに電気はある
of course, there's electricity in the room
人はあかりがないと
but when there's no light,
性格まで暗くなるらしい
even your personality gets dark and gloomy
僕はへやの暗さと同じように
i was just like the room
あかるくはなかった
completely devoid of light
そんな時
in times like then
僕のへやに光が入ってきた
then the light crept its way into my room
それは太陽の光だった
that light, which came shining in from the sun
明るくなかった僕は自然と明くなり
the darkness within me naturally brightened up
光というものはすごいなと感じた
it made me consider how amazing light really is
幻想的な文章だ...。
what a whimsical essay...
got a little track from nihoshika today. this entire album is really great, so expect more translations from it in the future. i really love the instrumentals of all the tracks on this album, and i think nihoshika is aware that it's a highlight for them, since many of the tracks on the album (including this one) have these fun instrumental outros.
the lyrics for this one are pretty simple, not too much complex symbolism to dig in to. just a cute little track! not too many translation notes due to how simple the song is, but here they are below:
性格まで暗くなるらしい
even your personality gets dark and gloomy
technically the japanese line just says "even your personality gets dark," which i do think is clear enough what the song is saying here, however describing somebody's personality as "dark" (暗い) as a way to say "depressed" or "gloomy" is actually a definition in the dictionary. because of that, i felt it was worth adding "and gloomy" to show that it was more of a literal comparison to negative/depressed feelings being made, rather than just an implied one

what a whimsical essay...
the word "幻想的" used here has the meaning of "fantastic," but more in the sense of actually being derived from fantasy rather than the more colloquial english usage of that word just meaning "awesome" or "great." i used the word "whimsical" which i think is slightly off but gets across the intended meaning better than "fantastic" or "wondrous" which i think can easily be interpreted differently in english
as for the meaning of the line, the video shows the lyrics being written out in what appears to be a school assignment, with the last line being written by the teacher. i don't know the details of this though, i never went to school in japan obviously, but the comments from japanese people i read seem to corroborate that this is typical fare for school assignments over there.
